What are the .net awards?

For the 2008 Awards the .net team and its contributors have scoured the web to put each list of nominees together, choosing the sites, services and people that we believe have made a serious impact in 2008. (Don’t agree with our shortlists? Drop us a line at netmag@futurenet.com.)

If it’s anything like last year…

The resoundingly successful 2007 Awards attracted thousands of nominations. Google came out on top (no change there then), picking up Mobile Site of the Year for its Gmail service, and Innovation of the Year for Google Earth, despite fierce competition from IPTV service Joost and Second Life.

Russell Brand’s popular Radio 2 show scooped Podcast of the Year, whilst Kevin Rose, the founder of the social news website Digg, was named Web Personality of the Year.

In the battle of the social networking titans, Facebook nabbed Socially Powered Site of the Year. Its main rival, MySpace, collected the dubious honour of Infamy of the Year, with judges condemning the customisation features which often led to “eyeball-bleeding poor design”.

Have your say in 2008

You’ll see many of the same faces in this year’s nominations, but do they deserve to hold on to their titles? The 3 nominees with the most votes in each category go before the judges in the .net Awards 2008. Have your say – vote now.
